IELTS OVERVIEW

The IELTS examination is comprised of the following four methods of evaluation:

 

Listening – (Est. 30 Minute Test)

 

-          There are four sections within the IELTS listening test that you will listen to

-          Each section gets a little bit more difficult in terms of understanding the vocabulary and content of the dialogues

-          The test comprises of fill in the blank questions, multiple choice, mapping & directions, labeling diagrams, matching, filling out forms and completing notes

 

Reading – (Est. 60 Minute Test)

-          The reading component has three different passages with corresponding questions

è The first section has two or three short factual texts

è The second section contains two short, work-related and factual texts

è The third section has one longer text on a general topic

-          The texts refer to a variety of reading materials from books, news articles, etc.

 

Writing – (Est. 60 Minute Test)

-          The writing section has two separate tasks

-          The first task (Minimum of 150 words) requires you to analyse graphs, charts, tables, diagrams, etc

è You will have to summarize the content or write a brief report on the information provided

-          The second task (Minimum of 250 words) requires you to write an essay on the given topic

è Keep in mind that the topics will range in the type of response that is being asked and so there are several essay structures you will have to follow based on the given question

 

Speaking – (Est. 15 Minute Test)

-          The speaking component of the IELTS examination is a face-to-face interview which includes short questions

-          The structure of the speaking test is formed into three parts

è Part 1: There are a few questions that are not complicated which is directed to ask about your interests and personal life

è Part 2: You will be given a minute to draft your ideas on a sheet of paper to answer a couple questions  about a particular topic (be sure that you are answering all the questions in your 1-2 minute speech)

è Part 3: This section is more like a discussion type format where you will be asked a very general topic and the interviewer may ask specific questions based on what you say (It is almost like a conversation)
